Health and Wellness

Health and Wellness is extremely difficult to achieve in such a fast moving world.

What we need to do is to start our day with a ritual. We all brush our teeth, we all get out of bed.

So let’s introduce health and wellness to our morning.

Start with a glass of water with lemon juice and even a dash of apple cider vinegar.

This will help to alkalise our body for the day.

We must stop and do things for us or we just let each day slip by and do nothing. Health and wellness is SO important to give a long fulfilled life.

So plan your morning ritual do it for 21 days, you have now developed habit to last a life time.

What is Better Yoga or Weight Lifting?

The big question is, “What type of body image are you after?”

Yoga and weightlifting work on different muscle fibres so the image is the question.  Most Yogis are slender or have wiry, not muscle-bound, builds.

However there are the exceptions to the rule…

Rodney Yee is one of them, he has been practicing for more than 30 years and he looks great.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Adam Levine, lead vocalist Maroon 5, states, “Yoga is by far the most convenient way to exercise while I’m on the road, you don’t need anything but a few feet of space and a mat.”

After Adam broke his sternum (chest bone) whilst weight lifting he began to use spotters and gave weights up completely for yoga in 2007.
After Adam’s first class he said he “instantly felt sculpted,” but that during the session it “felt like someone was ripping my body apart.”

Adam had lifted weights for years and found yoga to be the most convenient and much more physically satisfying than weight lifting.  The rocker assures that “the torture subsided over time,” and that it has proved to be most definitely more “satisfying physically” than lifting weights, which he’d been doing for years.

 

 

Another one is yogi, Cameron Alborzian once famous super model now living a content happy life as a yogi with a body to match.
Practicing yoga several times weekly, you can hang onto a lot of muscle.
When it comes to yoga and weight lifting they actually complement one another.  So whilst with yoga you can hold onto a certain amount of muscle mass, what you really need is a balance of the two.
Crow and Chaturanga Dandasana are great upper body positions you need more to build that upper body.  These positions are more likely to build the smaller, “slow-twitch” muscle fibers first (these are the fibers that runners and other endurance athletes have).
Those bulky muscles you want to keep are made up of “fast twitch” fibers and are best built through weight training.
With such a busy lifestyle there is only so much time so if you are going to do both yoga and weightlifting then ensure the time spent in your sessions is of high quality.

Of course, depending on your goals yoga on its own may well be all you need or want, just remember yoga is a great way to complement your weightlifting.

So what is Metabolic Cooking????

Metabolic cooking is back to basic cooking of healthy foods that will increase your metabolism.

These foods are designed to help you maintain a high metabolism and burn more calories naturally.

For years we have been eating all this quick, easy supposedly health food.

We know what we are eating is not good for us and we just keep on eating it whether it is convenience, laziness or just not sure what is and not good for us.

There are two things we know that are not good for us that is fats and sugar.

So is it as black and white as that.

Of course not.

Yes sugar is no good for us that is true and this diagram can show you why….

Fat Burning Zone is our Aim When our body’s sugar level is balanced it should be anywhere between 4.0 and 5.5 mmol/L.

There are many foods that are still classed as healthy and are full of sugar that will increase our blood sugar level.

These foods need to be avoided – cereals, orange juice, whole wheat bread,  and all those dressings stating low fat are bad sugar in disguise.
We have a sugary snack or something we believe to be healthy; our sugar level jumps up and it stays above 5.5 consistently then our body looks after us and releases insulin.

With this release of insulin our body stores fat and our blood sugar levels drop and then we feel hungry again and of course crave sugar so you can see how the cycle begins and meanwhile our body is constantly storing fat.

The question we ask is… Is our body looking after us?

Answer…. yes it is.

So the real question…. Are we looking after our body?

We all know this answer.   If we continue to do this to our body we could develop a condition called diabetes.

So what has this to do with back to basic metabolic cooking, well there are foods which will satisfy our hunger

and will keep our blood sugars maintained, we will always have an increase in sugar and insulin will be released to combat this, it will be just done at normal healthy ratios.

I have been trying for quite some time to get my head around from what we should and should not eat.

We live in a world where body image is so important and so everyone goes on those crazy diets, I was one of them.

I realise now it does not matter what you look like on the outside if your internal workings are letting you down.
Our body’s are wonderful the way they look after us, however like any machine if you do not maintain and service it, it will let you down.

The best and most valuable information I can share with you is metabolic cooking, honestly going back to basics, before processing came along.
Good foods that you can have are sprouted grain breads, rice, spelt, millet, quinoa, sweet potatoes, all fruit and vegetables, steak, chicken, fish and eggs. Image the meals you can make with these choices.  Yum.
Yes fruit has sugar, however the chains in those sugars are easily metabolised in our bodies so don’t be afraid to enjoy our wonderful fruit.
So now I have mentioned steak and eggs – any man’s dream, I should discuss metabolic cooking with fats.

There is always confusion with fats.

Are they good for us will fats make us fat.

Well yes, some fats certainly however there are good  fats that our body actually needs to increase metabolism and help keep our cholesterol levels down.

So start to enjoy fats like REAL butter, whole eggs, coconut oil, raw nuts, avocados and olive oil virgin pressed.

As I said before we need to avoid processed foods and the most obvious ones are the artificial sweeteners, soya milk, high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils  – these are those solid oils.

Last little one is the use of spices in your cooking this is wonderful for your metabolism.

Shapely Body for my Holiday Cruise

I am motivated to achieve a shapely body for my holiday cruise.

I even bought these see-through long beach pants to show off my body.

Now just have to fit into them.

I am a reasonably fit person and I find it easy to lose motivation for lots of things.

I was doing yoga 3-4 times a week and running 5-10 km 3 times a week.

Have not done this for months, so I searched the Internet and found this excellent book.

Took on its 31 day challenge and this photo is the result.  I took the photos myself

and tried to get them to be the same size so this is the best I could come up with.

Anyway now that I am going on this cruise up the east coast of Australia I want a more shapely body.
So I have talked my Mum and sister into getting a shapely body for the cruise.  It is a family get together for my parents 50th wedding anniversary.

Wow that is a long time actually that is how old I am??????? Few questions to ask on this cruise.

 

It is 30days until the cruise so today is Day 1 of my second 30 day challenge. (one day short I know)

Benefits of Coconut Milk Oil

Benefits of Coconut Milk / Oil, it is difficult to keep up with what is good for us and what is not.

Coconut milk seems to be on top of the list for what is good for us.

I have never really liked milk unless it was chocolate flavoured.

Stopped that one; once it became a purchase every time I stopped at the shop.
Then I started using soy milk, is that good for us. Apparently not, soya beans are healthy, however our processing of these beans does not produce the healthy benefit of the bean.

Each day I have a smoothie and milk choice is tricky.

Started making almond milk – however I would forget to soak the almonds overnight.

I then discovered coconut milk and that seems to tick all the boxes.

Coconuts are seen by some as a miracle food,

helping protect and cure the body of internal and external ailments.  The benefits of coconut milk / oil are many, most of which build up the immune system and the body’s defenses.
I found coconut milk in all of our supermarkets.

You can make it yourself, I buy mine.

I have posted some information on metabolic cooking and in that post you can see fats which are good for you and can help you to lose weight and of course the fats that do the opposite.

Coconut milk / oil is a saturated fat and is one of the good ones. yeah!

The fat in coconut milk is made up of short and medium chain fatty acids and the body loves them, the body quickly turns these chains into energy rather than storing them as fats.
Another great benefit of coconut milk/oil is that half of the medium-fatty chains are composed of lauric acid.

Lauric acid has anti-fungal, viral, microbial and bacterial properties.

Coconut milk can help boost the immune system.

Coconut milk is dairy, soy, nut and gluten free so if you are a vegan or lactose intolerant you should be jumping for joy.

Also beneficial for….

kidney and urinary bladder problems

prevention of heart disease as it contains about 50% lauric acid, which helps prevent high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure

reducing weight; it contains short and medium-chain fatty acids that help in taking off excessive weight.

healthy functioning of the thyroid and enzymes systems

increasing the body metabolism by removing stress on pancreas thereby burning out more energy and helping obese and overweight people reduce their weight.

Coconut milk/oil is used extensively in Ayurveda, the traditional Indian medicinal system.

It is fantastic for our internal workings, and it also great for our skin as a moisturiser.

Coconut oil helps in preventing premature aging and degenerative diseases due to its antioxidant properties,

I am currently trying this so at this point I will remain on the fence until a later post.

Personal Training in the Outdoors….

I found this video on you tube and

personal training in the outdoors is the best move you could make.

How much money have we spent for gym membership and have we ever really

received our money’s worth.

We go for a couple of weeks and then we miss a session.  This turns into two

sessions and so on….

We go and check out the body’s, the good ones are always just arriving as you have

to go pick up the kids at school.

No eye candy through the day what a waste of money.

Seriously we all go to the gym to get ourselves fit and healthy.

Why is this such a difficult task…

Well I was in that cycle going to the gym then getting bored or having time

constraints… then it just fizzled.

So then I moved onto the personal trainer…

… this can be so expensive.  Anyway went with the trainer and I was doing

well and kept going for about 3 months.  Then my PT told me he was leaving

oh no…. what to do.   He was going to a private training studio – even more expense.

He than offered to train me from his home.

Well can I say that was one of the best decisions of my life….

Personal training in the outdoors with minimal equipment and utilising the things around us.

I was quite skeptical about it all no real weights, no machines and no full on classes.

Well can I say within a couple of weeks I felt like I could see my abs.

It was a really hard workout but I felt great.

My PT then left for Spain and I could not follow him there so it once again fizzled.

Did nothing for months stopped my running and my yoga.

Wow it was not good.

Then I found a book about a 31 day challenge, which I did and it followed the same

principles as my PT – minimal equipment using your body.

This is the photo of me prior to the 31 day challenge at 65kg to the last day of challenge 60kg.

I tried to get the photos exact, however I am not a photographer.

 

 

 

 

The point is it works.

 

Am about to embark on another 30day challenge as going on a cruise middle of May.

Oxytocin in Women…its true value.

As women we are the nurturer

and in the 21st century this nurturer is being seen more and more in leadership roles; is this due to oxytocin release in women.

Women Entrepreneurs are starting to lead the way in the business world.

Women entrepreneurs have been moving away from the old movement that we have to remould ourselves using these quite stark positive affirmations….

WE ARE MONEY MAGNETS

MONEY WILL COME TO US

…this is okay for men; saying these statements releases adrenaline which promotes a fight or flight response in their system. So yes for men this does help to them to achieve and become successful, however we are women.

…as for women,

using a more feminine approach to these affirmations can help us to achieve and become successful and feel just as feminine on that path to success.

As compassionate nurturers we do not naturally enjoy being in constant states of “fight or flight” we are more “care and befriend,” so we need to say to ourselves more feminine statements which releases oxytocin in women….

“I trust that now is right for me to embody my success”

“My feminine energy is beautifully balanced”

Oxytocin in women, now being called the prosperity hormone, seems to be the basis for women’s success in business.

We are more “care and befriend,” and this is how we achieve and become successful. Yes we release adrenaline and that is for the times when we do need to use the fight or flight response, like when we are walking in the yard and we are confronted by a snake….yes fight or flight and hopefully we will choose flight.

Women who use the adrenaline approach tend to burn out easier and these women do not remain tapped into their own selves.

So how are women successful with business;

what is this “care and befriend”; well in women we have this wonderful hormone oxytocin.

Oxytocin is the hormone released in the most precious time of their lives – during childbirth, to open our cervix to allow our new baby to pass through the birth canal to be born, this process is not a comfortable one and this natural release of oxytocin gives women the ability to cope with childbirth.

The “gas” is okay too.

Also this chemical inspires a woman’s bonding mechanism with her partner, with her children and during times when other forms of bonding occur such as in building business relationships.

Oxytocin is referred to as the prosperity hormone and with its release, recently the chemical effects have been found to influence social behaviour in human bonding.

It may be involved in the formation of trust, empathy and generosity in personal relationships because it reduces anxiety and fears.

Today’s world of business is very focussed on developing business relationships and the release of oxytocin in women is proving that women entrepreneurs are on the rise and growing.

Why Women Entrepreneurs Are So Successful!

One of the primary drivers giving the opportunity for  women entrepreneurs to show their entrepreneurial skills is a  shift in our society.

Women are now a greater part of the economic make-up of society; there are more women in the workforce.
They are resourceful, leaving the workforce to stay home & raise a family, re-entering when the kids are grown or working a flex schedule when their kids go to school.

Women entrepreneurs are becoming more and more successful,

and the reason why; is that  they are natural collaborators and love doing project work together.

Women entrepreneurs are able to form relationships with customers, clients, colleagues and even those who seem to compete with them.
Women get the balance between collaboration and competition; and entrepreneurs in today’s environment need both.
A majority of women have raised a family, a husband and a home and they have learnt that flexibility, creativity and balance are the keys to a successful home-life and healthy lifestyle, so they just implement these strategies effectively in the workplace.

Women have learnt to step outside of their comfort zone and think outside the box.

Women no longer have to mimic men in order to be successful.

Women approach their career choices with authenticity and courage.  Their best single attribute that women bring to entrepreneurship is their relationship skills.
Business is all about people and relationships – and women entrepreneurs are natural networkers.

Women are innately inclined to nurture and encourage others that is what they do when raising children.  Women are superb collaborators. Women readily reach out and ask for help when they need to learn something.

We thrive on mutual interdependence.

Under stress, men’s reaction is “fight or flight” – women’s reaction is “tend and befriend,” due to our natural release of oxytocin which is now being called our prosperity hormone. I will leave this discussion for another post.

Women’s “tend and befriend” approach to their clients, colleagues and potential clients shows our essence of effective communication as we are being open and authentic; as women we are more prone to allow vulnerabilities to show through, engendering trust.
Today trust is probably the most important factor in sustaining credibility in such a cynical busy world, that is why so many more women are becoming successful women entrepreneurs.

31 Day Challenge

I have set myself a 31 Day Challenge to drop some excess weight.

Christmas & Holidays are brilliant, this year however an extra 5kgs came visiting and

seemed to want to take up permanent residence.

I don’t think so.

I searched the internet and found an interesting challenge.

It incorporated nutrition and 15 minutes a day of exercise.  Time to me is of great

importance and I am sure it is for all.  Also they say it takes 21 days to form a habit so

am hoping that after the 31 day challenge the habit should be set.

They say weight-loss is actually 80% nutrition & 20% exercise.

I will talk about nutrition on another post as this post is to introduce you to the exercise positions for the challenge.

I have started putting my day to day exercise on  the Women Empowered Online Forum.

So please feel free to join and join the 31 day challenge.  I am on there everyday so

am willing to share and motivate all who are prepared to take on this 31 day Challenge.

If you do decide to do it ensure you take a photo of yourself  from neck to knee – can be

quite a motivator.

Below is a video of me showing some of the positions I do in the 15mins.

Now there is a beginners and even a sedentary program for ones that need to start

with not as intense exercise.

Getting Back Into the Rhythm…

Let’s get back to the rhythm we live in a physical world of vibrations, sound waves are vibrations, light waves are a form of vibration and our brain waves are a form of vibration. So I do believe it is time to get back to the rhythm.
